The Dawn Malcolm began its journeys as the Gideon, owned by Charles Gaul, a moderately successful British merchant. When the political climate changed and his business and riches disappeared, he became wrathful and turned to piracy. He sold all of his possessions except the Gideon and used the money to hire a crew to follow stories of a Chart in the Far East. Of all the people who had ever searched for a Chart, Gaul spent the longest time, totaling over thirty years. Like all but Captain Malcolm and the ships under Rawkas' command, Gaul failed ever to find an actual Chart. However, in that time the Gideon amassed several legends of its own, most claiming Gaul had found a Chart and that it was built into its hull during repairs.
